With each sip, taste the unparalleled tradition of expert craftsmanship
The Bruichladdich distillery traces its origins back to 1881 (the same year Bunnahabhain distillery was built on the same isle), but has had more than its fair share of closures during its long history. Most recently, the distillery was effectively closed in 1995 until a group of Islay residents and a London wine merchant purchased the distillery in 2001. This was the beginning of the current incarnation of Bruichladdich as a trail-blazing maverick. Thankfully an ideology that has continued on since Remy Contreau acquired the distillery in 2012.
The flavour profile of Bruichladdich whisky is characterised by its sweet, honeyed and floral notes, a direct result of their long fermentation times and the use of 100% Scottish barley, with a significant portion sourced directly from Islay. The distillation process plays a crucial role in achieving this signature taste, with a notable mention of their Octomore edition, which is known for its heavy peat and complex flavours.

FAQs
What sets Bruichladdich Scotch Whisky apart from other Scotch whiskies?
Bruichladdich Scotch Whisky stands out for its unique approach to whisky making, emphasising the importance of terroir in its products. This focus on terroir is evident in their Islay Barley series, showcasing the belief that the quality and flavour profile of whisky can be influenced by the local environment where the barley is grown.
What is the distillation process used to create Bruichladdich Scotch Whisky?
The new-makes from the Bruichladdich stills are sweet, honeyed and floral, no doubt partially influenced by the relatively long average fermentation time of 75-80 hours and slightly lower still charges/fillings to increase copper contact.
The production is roughly split 50% to Bruichladdich distillations, 40% to the medium-peated Port Charlotte, and 10% to the heavily peated Octomore distillations.
The distillery fills a wide variety of different cask types at a fill strength of 68%. Bruichladdich also uses 100% Scottish barley, with roughly 50% from Islay itself and roughly 5% having organic certification.
Are there different expressions or editions of Bruichladdich available, and how do they differ?
Bruichladdich offers a variety of expressions, including the heavily peated Octomore, the medium-peated Port Charlotte and the unpeated Classic Laddie. Each expression brings its own unique flavour profile, demonstrating the distillery's versatility and commitment to showcasing the full spectrum of Islay whisky
How should one best enjoy Bruichladdich Scotch – neat, on the rocks or in cocktails?
When it comes to enjoying Bruichladdich, aficionados have the freedom to indulge in its rich tapestry of flavours in a manner that best suits their palate.
For purists, sipping it neat is often the preferred method, allowing the whisky’s complex character and subtle nuances to unfold elegantly at room temperature, unhindered by dilution.
On the other hand, adding a splash of water or enjoying it on the rocks can open up new dimensions of flavour, softening the alcohol’s bite and revealing hidden notes and aromas.
For the more adventurous, Bruichladdich’s versatile profile makes it an exquisite base for cocktails, where its distinctive qualities can be harmoniously blended with other ingredients to create innovative and sophisticated drinks.
