Michter’s Distillery traces its roots back to 1753, when Swiss Mennonite farmer John Shenk founded what would become America’s first whiskey company in Schaefferstown, Pennsylvania. Originally known as Shenk’s and later Bomberger’s, the distillery gained historical fame for producing rye whiskey that reportedly warmed the troops at Valley Forge during the Revolutionary War. The name “Michter’s” emerged in the 1950s, a blend of the names Michael and Peter—sons of then-owner Lou Forman. After closing its Pennsylvania operations in 1990 due to bankruptcy, the brand was revived in 1996 by Joseph Magliocco and Richard Newman, who relocated production to Kentucky and ushered in a new era of premium American whiskey. Today, Michter’s is celebrated for its commitment to quality and its deep reverence for tradition.
